Bicoastal Media earns St. Jude "Partner Of The Year" award Bicoastal Corporate - August 16, 2011 In honor of its dedication to supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® in its mission to find cures for childhood cancer, Bicoastal Media recently received the Country Cares for St. Jude Kids® Partner of the Year award. Over the past decade the company’s participating radio stations raised more than $2.3 million dollars for the kids of St. Jude with the help of its listeners, supporters, and sponsors. Bicoastal Media’s President and COO, Michael Wilson, along with KRED DJ Rollin Trehearne, accepted the award at an annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner held July 31 in Memphis, Tenn. "We are grateful for this recognition," Wilson said. "Our team works hard every day to keep the mission of St. Jude top of mind with our listeners. We’re delighted to play a small part in helping raise funds so the researchers and doctors can continue to work miracles every day. The true reward from this partnership is the gratitude we see in the eyes of the parents and kids of St. Jude. On the west coast, Bicoastal Media’s main fundraising programs both support St. Jude - the Country Cares for St. Jude Kids® Radiothon and the Radio Cares for St. Jude Kids® radiothon. The radiothons span 26 hours for more than two days, and on-air announcers relate their experiences visiting the hospital and share patient stories. Listeners are then encouraged to call-in to the stations, where teams of local volunteers ask them to become a 'Partner In Hope' by making a $20 a month donation (only 67 cents a day)that helps St. Jude make a big impact in the lives of children fighting cancer and other catastrophic diseases. The daily operating cost of St. Jude is $1.7 million, and 75 percent of the hospital’s operating costs are covered by public donations. "It is so heart-warming to know that Country Cares continues the vision that started 22 years ago of putting the kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital first," says Country Cares board member and California St. Jude patient father, Don Langford. "What an accomplishment for a group of stations to stand tall for the kids and for the hospital. Thank you, Bicoastal Media.

Bicoastal Media Coos Bay launches its High School Broadcast intern program. Katelyn Trachsel, a junior at Marshfield High School is the first student to complete the four week commercial radio program developed by market manager George Feola. Students receive hard grades from the program and they count toward completion of the high school curriculum. Upwards of eight students could participate annually. Steve Walker, Marshfield High School Broadcast instructor, is hopeful that the program will be a model undertaken by all high schools with broadcast curriculums in Oregon. According to Feola, “This is great opportunity to develop up and coming young broadcasters, which is increasingly difficult in today’s broadcast environment.”

Bicoastal stations in every market are stepping forward to assist our communities in these uncertain economic times. One of the national treasures along the Columbia River is the popular Discovery Center. The Center was informed that due to a bankruptcy that cruise boats would not be running this year causing a loss of tens of thousands of dollars. The Bicoastal station group stepped forward with a 30,000 dollar in kind contribution to help reach out to build attendance during the high volume summer tourist season. This is just an example of Bicoastal’s outreach to partner with organizations throughout our region.
One of the most satisfying things that the people of Bicoastal Media have the privilege to do each year is support charities in our communities, region and nation. Several station groups focus on St. Jude’s Research Hospital. "Radio Cares" events have been held in Medford, Crescent City, Albany and Eureka so far in 2009, raising an amazing 252,494 dollars.
